The Kelowna sign was conceptualized to support downtown vibrancy, tourism, and everyday community connection, in Kelowna, while helping increase foot traffic to nearby businesses and supporting local economic activity.
Place-naming is a powerful tool that helps foster collective identity and give focal point of appreciation to a local community. We wanted to pull away from the traditional approach to signature signs and offer more than just a name. Clearly defined letterforms forms stand out against the surroundings of the waterfront, while sweeping organic interior panels mimic the rhythm of the landscape, keeping in conversation with the natural surroundings rather than feeling like an intrusion. The structures are built to encourage sitting, climbing and exploration.
Dynamic lighting changes to match sunrise, sunset, current weather conditions, and occasionally to specific colours to celebrate events and holidays. Backlit, perforated panels display artwork curated by Indigenous consultant Coralee Miller. Their art features symbols of nature and represents our continued connection, relationship and accountability to the health and well-being of the water, the land, wildlife and each other.
“Kelowna’s Signature Sign is a meaningful addition to our waterfront that transforms an underused space in Stuart Park into an inviting, interactive landmark for residents and visitors” - Mayor Tom Dyas
