Calgary Arts Development’s Northeast Mini Galleries public art program showcases the work of local artists year-round through rotating exhibitions in neighbourhoods across Northeast Calgary. We were commissioned to redesign the galleries with a focus on visibility, accessibility, security, and durability.
The challenge was to create an eye-catching yet resilient outdoor structure that could serve as a dedicated stage for both 2D and 3D artworks, facilitate easy artwork change-outs, and discourage vandalism and break-ins. Our solution was to design a friendly, approachable structure constructed from durable aluminum, with a soft white interior that creates a clean, gallery-like setting, allowing the artwork to remain the focus. Large viewing windows bring natural light into the space, while a bold exterior colour gives the galleries a recognizable presence within their neighborhoods.
The result is a secure and flexible exhibition platform designed to support a variety of artwork while encouraging moments of casual discovery within the community.
Since the installation of the new cases, "Applications to the program have doubled” - Tiffany Wollman, Calgary Arts Development’s project specialist
